Peer Pressure & Pleasant Surprises


My daughter came home from school the other day looking like she'd been left out of the cool kids' club because she was the only one who hadn't seen Kpop Demon Hunters. I knew right then my Saturday was booked. Honestly, the word "K-Pop" alone is enough to make my eyes roll hard and leave me shouting "gaaaaaaaay." for about 1 minute straight. I was psychologically prepared for absolute torture. But what do you know... I actually really f***ing liked this movie. I even watched it almost twice in a row; the first time was a Russian dub, and I had to re-watch scenes to hear the songs in English, which sound way better. KPop Demon Hunter is a surprisingly powerful fusion of South Korea's biggest cultural exports: the slick, hyper-modern world of K-Pop and the deep, ancient well of its national folklore.

Cool Villains & Cringe Heroes


First off, I have to give props to the animation. It's got that Spider-Verse vibe, and by the way, I still need to write a love letter to Across the Spider-Verse because it's one of the coolest animated films of the decade. The story here was surprisingly interesting and kept my attention. I'll admit, the heroines were a bit cringe for a guy in his 30s—all the "popcorn eyes" humor just isn't for me, though they still had their cool moments. The real shocker was the villains. I found myself thinking, "Damn, do I hate this music?! They look cool... but the music? Am I… enjoying this?" My brain was tilting until I finally had to admit that this K-Pop demon hunting sh** is kinda cool. Of course, the fact that I, a dad, think it's cool probably makes it instantly less cool for actual kids.

A Dad-Approved Netflix Hit


This is apparently the most-watched movie on Netflix right now, and for once, the hype is understandable. I went in expecting to hate it and find a bunch of stupid, unsuitable messages for my 7-year-old, but it was better than okay. The peer pressure worked out this time. It's not the most original movie ever made, but it feels fresh, especially since we don't get a lot of K-Pop or Korean folklore stuff around here. The fight scenes were also really slick. Overall, I definitely recommend watching this with your kids. It's a solid time. The massive, organized devotion of a K-Pop fandom can be understood as a form of collective psychic energy. In many mythological traditions, belief and devotion are direct sources of power for deities and spirits; a Korean shamanistic belief, for example, holds that spirits grow stronger with the faith invested in them and weaker without it. Applying this framework to the modern K-Pop context, a fandom's collective adoration is more than just emotional support; it is a tangible force that fuels an idol's success, influence, and cultural resonance. This creates a compelling dynamic for a story like K-Pop Demon Hunters. The idols' supernatural abilities could be directly powered by their fans' engagement, their streaming numbers, album sales, or social media mentions.
