Lore is a 2012 Australian-German film written by Robin Mukherjee, co-written and directed by Cate Shortland and funded by the UK Film Council. It stars Saskia Rosendahl, Kai Malina, Nele Trebs and Ursina Lardi. The film had its Australian premiere at the 2012 Sydney Film Festival. Lore received the Feature Film Production of the Year Award at the 2013 Screen Producers Australia Awards. Lore also received the bronze award for Outstanding Feature Film at the German Film Awards. Lore has also received 17 other awards internationally. Despite spending time living in Berlin and directing the movie where the actors performed completely in German, director Cate Shortland doesn't speak the language.
As the Allies sweep across Germany, Lore leads her siblings on a journey that exposes them to the truth of their parents' beliefs. An encounter with a mysterious refugee forces Lore to rely on a person she has always been taught to hate.
***SPOILER ALERT***
A slow-paced movie about German survival in the aftermath of WWII. Very good cinematography, the reason why I didn't fall asleep.
To the people who think that this film was designed to engender sympathy for the Nazi Germans and wanted to see the main characters tortured and killed: I can only say that you people are ignorant and in serious need of developing compassion.
