Project Nim is a 2011 British documentary film. It has won 16 awards, as well as being nominated for a BAFTA. The film focuses on Project Nim, a research project that was mounted to determine whether a primate raised in close contact with humans could develop a limited "language" based on American Sign Language. The project was centred on a chimpanzee named Nim Chimpsky.
From the Oscar-winning team behind MAN ON WIRE comes the story of Nim, the chimpanzee who in the 1970s became the focus of a landmark experiment which aimed to show that an ape could learn to communicate with language if raised and nurtured like a human child. Following Nim's extraordinary journey through human society, and the enduring impact he makes on the people he meets along the way, the film is an unflinching and unsentimental biography of an animal we tried to make human. What we learn about his true nature - and indeed our own - is comic, revealing and profoundly unsettling.
***SPOILER ALERT***
We're off to a good start. Let's take this baby chimp from his mother, dress him up, give him some marijuana, alcohol and see what happens. The human morons did it again. They had it all covered for this science project...
There's too much heartbreaking stuff going on here. I'm just going to hold on to this picture and laugh at the moment where Nim is trying to hump a cat.
I'm in agreement with the majority of people — Herbert Terrace is a TOTAL ASS. And for that reason I award him with the scumbag hat, congrats!
