SABU Week Wrap-up

Hello dear visitors! As we around here enjoyed SABU's movies so much, we are extending this past week's theme and we will watch 5 more movies directed by him. Me and Krasnaya gave a perfect score to Mr. Long (2017) , and were also very pleased with Jam (2018) . We highly recommend watching these two movies first if you are interested in knowing this director's work. My Blood and Bones in a Flowing Galaxy (2021) is also a very good and surprising movie, with a nice abrupt twist that introduces a new genre into the movie. Bunny Drop (2011) will work well for very sensitive people who don't like violence and blood on their screens. It's a really soft and heartwarming movie with a moderate pace based on a manga of the same name. It's important to note that the end of the movie follows the story from the anime series and not the one from the manga. These endings are so different that they divided the Bunny Drop fandom. Dangan Runner (1996)  is not recommended for...

Mr. Long (2017)

Mr. Long is a 2017 internationally co-produced crime drama film directed and written by Sabu starring Chang Chen as Long. It was selected to compete for the Golden Bear in the main competition section of the 67th Berlin International Film Festival. source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Long Professional hitman Long takes on an assignment in Japan. When things go awry, he has to flee. Badly injured, he takes refuge in a deserted part of a small town. source: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6509862/ ***SPOILER ALERT*** K: Another movie and another wow! SABU is striking in its versatility. Mr. Long for me is a masterpiece. This is an outstanding movie! After watching, I could not sleep, constantly going over and over some moments from the movie in my head. Again, a film about fate, and this time also about loneliness that hurts the heart. Somewhere in the backyard of life there lives a silent and sad man who knows his job well, a woman with a ch...

Jam (2018)

Jam is a 2018 Japanese comedy drama movie written and directed by SABU. A follow-up 8 episode TV show was produced in 2021 called Jam: The Drama. source: there is no wikipedia!!! Sucks! Hiroshi, Takeru and Tetsuo all live in the same city. Hiroshi is an unpopular idol singer and he feels a void in his life. He is placed under confinement by his fan Masako. Takeru believes that a girl returns to consciousness. Tetsuo decides to take revenge on a yakuza who sent him to prison. source: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9238590/ ***SPOILER ALERT*** F: Hey there! We're almost finishing our SABU week and I want to tell you that I wouldn't mind doing a SABU marathon after watching Jam. This movie has a similar story structure to SABU's Dangan Runner and you will find the usual director's imagetic. Someone is always running when close to the climax, and the plot is resolved this time with a car rushing to the sounds of beeping music (I love ...

Dangan Runner (1996)

Dangan Runner also known as Non-Stop is a 1996 Japanese comedy movie directed by SABU. It is SABU debut movie. source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bunny_Drop_(film) A salaryman, a drug addict and a yakuza go on a breathless three man chase through the streets of Tokyo, each for a different reason and fighting demons. source: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116015/ ***SPOILER ALERT*** K: The 1996 Dangan Runner is SABU's debut entry. The film lasts only 82 minutes, but in places it seemed to me that it was somehow longer. The final scene seemed to stop. Probably the director intended it this way, so that the viewer could catch his breath along with the characters of the film and understand what all this chasing was for. The film is very masculine, it is about dominance, about the desire of every man to prove something to himself and others. SABU masterfully mixed elements of art house and the then popular yakuza theme, added quirky Japanese h...

Week 7 Theme Announcement

Wattup everybody? Today, for my great pleasure, we got SABU for our themed week (14 - 18 June). We recently watched a movie made by him - Postman Blues , in our " 90's Japanese Crime Movies " week. I immediately had to put his name on our raffle after finishing it. SABU (born November 18, 1964) is the pseudonym of Japanese actor and director Hiroyuki Tanaka. Sabu studied at an Osaka fashion school before deciding to go to Tokyo to become a professional musician. It was suggested he try acting and in 1986 he made his film debut in Sorobanzuku. He earned his first starring role in 1991's World Apartment Horror, a live-action film directed by Katsuhiro Ōtomo of Akira fame. Working from a script he wrote himself, he made his directorial debut with the 1996 Dangan Runner. There isn't much information about SABU online and his movies were really hard to find. This sounds just like the right kind of cult director to follow. Let's see what we have got in sto...
